Camping at Moose Lake Gospel Camp By Jamieson Day (At Age 9)
Welcome to Moose Lake Gospel Camp! That is the sign that greets you as you enter the campgrounds. Hi, my name is Jamieson, it takes me and my family 6 hours to get there from where we live in Saskatchewan, but we don’t mind, cause it’s worth it.
Moose Lake is located in northern Alberta. It feels like you’re in a forest when you are there because there are so many trees and it smells so good. When I’m at kid’s camp I stay at a cabin with other kids and a counsellor. I never get home sick; I could stay there for a hundred days! I make lots of friends and we get to do lots of stuff.
At Family Camp I stay with my family in a camper.
At camp we have morning class and an evening service. We learn about God and how much he loves us and we sing and learn new songs with actions.
We eat our meals in the dining hall and everybody helps with a job called “Gratis.” Last year I scraped plates so they could go in the dishwasher. I also like to help my friend, Clayton, he is the camp manager, I help him collect garbage and unload the groceries. Some things we do at camp is swimming, canoeing, tubing and wakeboarding. There is a floating dock and a water trampoline that is fun to play on. During the week there is a sand castle building contest and a fishing derby, some kids get up really early to try and catch the BIG ONE. Also there is beach volleyball, a horseshoe pit and 4 trampolines. Of course there are camp fires at the beach almost every night.
Did I mention the canteen? That’s a favourite stop, it is open every afternoon, you can buy candy, pop, ice cream treats and popcorn.
There are several trails to go on, a bike trail with little bridges and ramps, a trail that takes you to the archery range, a nature trail and other trails that take you to the beach.
Last year we were not allowed to go on the trails without an adult because a bear had been spotted, and we did not want to become bear food. When we went on the trails we had to make noise like sing or talk or whistle, that way we would startle the bears and they would keep far away from us. I can’t wait for camp to start again this year, I always have a good time! You should come and try it out, I think you would love it too!
